Among the real Horizon stores that get enough traffic for Chrome to collect field data, 57.1% pass Google\u2019s Core Web Vitals, the weakest pass rate of Shopify\u2019s most-used themes. Dawn, the free default most Horizon adopters are moving from, sits higher at 70.7%. Both themes post a similar median largest contentful paint, so the difference shows up in how many stores clear every Core Web Vitals threshold rather than in one headline metric.<\/p>\n<p>Treat these figures as a comparison between themes rather than a verdict on any single store. They come from the Chrome User Experience Report, which only includes stores with enough visitors to register field data, so the sample skews toward larger shops and the pass rates describe stores in our dataset, not every Shopify store. The order between themes is stable; the exact percentages move as more stores report. If page speed is your deciding factor, a well-reviewed paid theme currently clears Core Web Vitals more often than Horizon does.<\/p>\n<p>If you run a Shopify Horizon theme store through Google\u2019s PageSpeed test yourself, you may get a result that seems to contradict everything above. <a href=\"https:\/\/community.shopify.com\/t\/i-ran-about-6-000-shopify-stores-through-google-pagespeed-heres-what-stood-out\/700799\" rel=\"nofollow\">An independent study of about 6,000 live stores<\/a>, published in October 2026, ran that test and scored Horizon the fastest of the five major themes. Both findings are real, and they measure two different things. A PageSpeed score is a single lab run on a simulated, throttled phone, captured in one moment. The pass rate we publish is the opposite: 28 days of real Chrome visitors on their own devices and connections, which is what Google actually ranks on. The study\u2019s author made the same point about his own numbers, noting that a typical store\u2019s main content appeared at about 9.9 seconds in his lab test but 1.9 seconds for real visitors, and that 39% of the stores scoring under 50 still passed all three real-visitor checks. So run the test if you want a quick look, but read the real-visitor section when you decide: our Horizon pass rate above is that real-visitor view, drawn from the thousands of live Horizon storefronts Chrome has enough traffic to measure.<\/p>\n<p>One pattern in our own data is worth flagging plainly, because it cuts against a point we argue elsewhere. On most themes, what a merchant installs matters more than the theme itself, and our <a href=\"https:\/\/shopthemedetector.com\/blog\/shopify-theme-slow\/\">guide to why Shopify stores run slow<\/a> makes that case: across the other major themes, the more apps their stores load, the lower they tend to score. Horizon is the exception. Horizon stores average about 3.6 apps, the fewest of any major theme, while the heaviest of them, Empire, run closer to 7.7. Horizon still finishes last of the majors on real-visitor Core Web Vitals, which is the opposite of what the app explanation predicts. We checked whether merchants were simply loading Horizon stores up with apps, and they are not: comparing only lightly-loaded stores, which strips most of the app weight out, Horizon passes Core Web Vitals 61.8% of the time against the free Dawn theme\u2019s 79.1%. So on Horizon specifically the theme\u2019s own code looks like the constraint, not the apps on top of it. One honest caveat: Horizon is Shopify\u2019s newest flagship theme, so its stores skew newer and smaller and Chrome has thinner field coverage for it than for an established theme like Dawn. The ranking holds, but read the exact percentages as describing the Horizon stores in our dataset rather than every Horizon store.<\/p>\n<h2>The Review Reality: Horizon Is One of the Worst-Rated Themes on Shopify<\/h2>\n<p>Here is the part almost no one mentions. On its live Shopify Theme Store listing, Horizon holds just 34% positive from 198 reviews (67 positive, 51 neutral, 80 negative). Shopify does not publish a star score for Horizon; it shows the share of reviews that are positive, and only about a third of them are.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn, the theme Horizon replaces as the default, is no better: 35% positive from 284 reviews (100 positive, 70 neutral, 114 negative). So the two most-installed themes on Shopify, Dawn at rank #1 and Horizon at rank #2 in our dataset, are also the two worst-reviewed. The paid themes sitting just behind them on adoption tell the opposite story: Prestige (rank #3) holds a 4.55 rating across 859 reviews at $400, and Impulse (rank #4) holds 4.70 across 1,291 reviews at $500.<\/p>\n<p>What does \u201c34% positive\u201d actually mean? It is not a quality score in the way a 4.5-star paid theme is. A default theme ships on every new store that does not go looking for something else, so its review pool fills with merchants who never chose it, hit a limit, and left a short complaint. Paid themes are only ever installed on purpose, by people who researched the choice, which lifts their ratings. Most of the negative Horizon reviews are about missing features or the learning curve of the new editor, not broken code.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway for your store: do not read Horizon\u2019s low positive score as \u201cthis theme is broken.\u201d Read it as a signal that a free default is a fine starting point but rarely the finished answer. If reviews are your deciding factor, a well-rated paid theme is the safer buy. If budget is, Horizon is a capable free base you can grow into.<\/p>\n<h2>The Ten Horizon Themes at a Glance<\/h2>\n<p>Horizon is not a single theme. It is ten distinct visual directions built on the same modular foundation: Prestige, Impulse, Craft, Studio, Narrative, Sense, Focal, Refresh, Endeavor, and Meridian. Each targets a different aesthetic and use case.<\/p>\n<p>The critical detail: all ten share the same underlying framework. That means a store can switch between designs without losing customization work or app integrations. The block system carries over. Your Klaviyo flow, your product page layout, your collection filtering all stay intact when you rebrand the visual layer. This architectural approach is genuinely novel in Shopify\u2019s theme ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Merchants Are Choosing Horizon<\/h2>\n<p>The data shows three clear use cases driving adoption:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subscription stores.<\/strong> Horizon is one of the top themes for subscription merchants. The modular design handles recurring product pages and flexible billing layouts cleanly, without requiring Bold or Recharge to do heavy lifting on customization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Handmade and craft brands.<\/strong> Horizon includes native story sections for maker bios and process photography. Etsy migrants particularly favor it because the layout assumptions finally match their business model from day one: multiple photos, maker credit, reviews, direct customer relationships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fast-launch stores.<\/strong> Teams on a timeline can pick a Horizon design, drag blocks around, plug in their apps, and ship in days. No Liquid, no developer dependency, no 3-week setup project. For bootstrapped founders and internal teams, that\u2019s a real competitive advantage.<\/p>\n<h2>The Real Constraints: What Horizon Doesn\u2019t Do<\/h2>\n<p>Horizon wins on speed and flexibility, but there are genuine tradeoffs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Complex variants.<\/strong> If your products have 50+ SKUs with size\/color\/material options, Horizon can feel cramped.
