Selling liquor online has more moving parts than most Shopify categories. It is not the demand that makes it hard, since customers are ready to buy; it is the layer of legal checks that has to sit on top of a working store. Age verification, country and state shipping rules, adult signature at delivery, license documentation, and record-keeping are all part of a compliant setup, not optional extras. This guide walks through the pieces you have to line up before you launch a Shopify liquor store, and where the common shortcuts tend to catch operators out.

Key Takeaways

1

Age verification is a legal requirement, not a UX choice. Build it in before you take the first order.

2

Ship only to jurisdictions where you hold a licence and where the destination legally allows liquor delivery.

3

Set the age gate to the correct threshold for each market (18 across most of Europe, 21 across the United States, 20 in some countries).

4

Keep verifiable records of every order, ID check, and shipping confirmation to defend against enforcement claims later.

5

Choose payment providers and shipping carriers that explicitly support alcohol sales; not all of them do.

Age Check Is a Legal Requirement, Not a UX Nicety

Age verification is what protects the store from the fines and license risk that come with an underage sale. Most Shopify age-check apps ask the buyer to confirm birth date on the storefront, and the better options re-verify at checkout and request a document upload for higher-risk products.
