When a customer is putting through an order, they will be asked to enter lots of information to help you deliver their goods. Part of this process will be their address, name, and other contact details. However, customers might also want to add notes about the order. This could be to ask for a specific delivery date, or request a specific color when you offer a product that comes in a random assortment.

The notes section is used across eCommerce to help customers make these remarks and it offers customers a much better experience. However, Shopify does not have a notes section in the checkout experience as standard. This means that you have to add it in yourself.

There are lots of apps that can help you with the checkout experience; however, there aren’t great apps for adding notes to the checkout experience. But there are other ways to do this that are quite simple. Follow these steps.

Key Takeaways
1
Adding a notes section in Shopify enhances customer experience by allowing personalized order requests.
2
Shopify doesn’t include a notes section by default, which requires manual addition to the checkout process.
3
Enabling cart notes involves logging into your store, navigating to themes, and adjusting cart settings.

Step 1 - Log In

Login to your Shopify store with your store credentials.

Step 2 - Themes

Next you need to head to the Online Store and then the themes section of your website. You need to find the theme that you’re looking to edit, the current one that you’re using unless you plan to change your theme.

When you’ve found your theme, you need to click on the ‘Customize’ option.

Step 3 - Cart

Now you need to make changes to your cart settings within the theme file. So you need to find these settings, they can be in either the ‘Theme Settings’ or the sections tabs.

The first thing to do is to click on the theme settings. Look to see if there are theme cart settings available within this section.

If the cart settings are not here, then you need to click on the ‘Sections’ option. Then you need to access your theme’s cart by going into the theme preview and click on the cart icon in the header and that will take you to the preview of the cart page.

Step 4 - Enable Cart Notes

Whichever option you’ve had to use, there should be the choice to enable your order notes.

When you’ve enabled them, you can click on the ‘Save’ option to ensure that order notes are on your cart page.

How To Edit Your Order Notes Label

At times you might want to add more of an instruction onto your notes through the label. This could be when you want to request more information about delivery or if you want to use the section to have gift wrap messages added. If it is the latter, you might be better using an app, like this gift wrap app here.

If however, you prefer to use the current note section available through the Shopify main website, then you could follow these steps.

Step 1 - Log In

Access your Shopify store’s admin section with your store credentials.

Step 2 - Themes

Find the Online Store and then click into the themes section of your website. Find the theme you would like to edit, this is normally the current one that you’re using, unless you plan to change your theme.

When you’ve found your theme, you need to click on ‘Actions’ and then the ‘Edit Languages’ option.

Step 3 - Change Label

In the Filter translation box, type in the following: ‘Special instructions’. This will display the order notes translation. Then you can add your new label of the order notes.

Step 4 - Save

When complete, click on the save option.
