How to Select a New Checkout Language on Shopify
Last modified: December 2, 2021
Not every store should have the checkout language in English, the default of Shopify. If you have any product sold on your online store, you can get the checkout translated to whichever language you would like. This allows you to have your website in the language of your customers and main audience, giving them a better experience.
There are lots of ways to do this. You can use some multilingual apps, translation apps and by translating the checkout fields individually.
Or, you can edit your theme to make it read in the preferred language. This is easier if your theme has translations that are already written into them. This article gives you the detailed instructions on how you can achieve this.
Step 1 – Login
The first step is to login to your Shopify store.
Step 2 - Go to Settings
From the Shopify dashboard you need to head over to the ‘Settings’ field that is located in the bottom right. From the ‘Settings’ page, you should visit the ‘Checkout’ page.
Step 3 – Manage
When on the ‘Checkout’ management page, you should scroll down to the bottom of the page. There you will find the ‘Checkout Language’ section. You can click on the option that reads ‘Manage Checkout Language’.
Step 4 – Change Theme Language
Under the headline ‘Language (XXXXXX)’ where XXXXXX is the current language, you can click on the ‘Change Theme Language’.
You can then select the new language from the dialogue popup that appears on the screen. Be sure that you change the language into the right one. If you make a mistake it can damage conversions on your website before you realize.
When you’ve made the change, you might want to do a test purchase to just check.
Step 5 – Save
When you’ve completed the selection of the language, click on the ‘Save’ option. This is when you can run a test of the changes.
What if your Language is not on the List?
If your language isn’t available on the list, then you might need to use a translation app. There are numerous multilingual apps, including this one here. Or you can change the theme template files yourself. This is a longer process, but it might be the best option.
Final Word: How to Select a New Checkout Language on Shopify
Are you selling to audiences that don’t speak English as their main language? Perhaps you would like to then have the checkout in another language. You can do this in several ways. The easiest is to change the language being used by the template within the settings file. This process is detailed above and it takes just minutes to process. It also means that you don’t run the risk of making mistakes.
However, it isn’t always the option that is possible. In this case you need to change the theme files and this you might need the skills of a developer to help you out.
