Debut Shopify Theme Review

Is the Debut Shopify theme good for a new store in 2026?
You cannot start a new store on Debut, since Shopify removed it from the Theme Store in 2022. For a fresh build, Dawn is the free replacement that runs on Online Store 2.0 and still receives updates. Debut only matters now if you already run it or inherited a store that does.
-
Is Debut an Online Store 2.0 theme?
No. Debut is a Vintage theme from the generation before Online Store 2.0. That is why it lacks section groups, app blocks, and metafield support. Existing Debut stores keep working, but the theme will not gain those newer capabilities.
-
How fast is the Debut Shopify theme?
Debut performs well because it is lightweight. Across real Debut stores in the Chrome UX Report, a strong majority pass Google’s Core Web Vitals, and stores running only a few apps do even better. Most slowdowns on Debut stores come from added apps rather than the theme itself.
-
Which apps do Debut stores rely on most?
Our scans show Debut stores lean on email marketing, product-review, and subscription apps, plus page builders. That reflects gaps in the theme, since Debut has no native reviews, limited capture, and fixed sections. The apps fill in what a modern theme would include by default.
-
Can I still edit and get support for the Debut theme?
You can still open Debut in the theme customizer and change settings, colors, and content on a store that already has it. Shopify no longer ships feature updates for Vintage themes, and official theme support is limited. For anything beyond basic edits, moving to a current theme is the safer path.
-
What should I switch to if I move off Debut?
Dawn is the closest free option and the one most former Debut stores adopt, since a theme swap preserves your products and content. If you want more design range, a paid Online Store 2.0 theme gives you closer control over layout. Our Debut alternatives guide compares the strongest matches.
