Shopify Payments charges 2.4% to 2.9% + 30¢ per online card sale in the US. Use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments and Shopify adds an extra 0.6% to 2% on top. Your exact rate depends on your plan.

Shopify Fees Per Sale: What You Pay on Each Order

On every sale you process through Shopify Payments, Shopify takes a percentage of the order plus a flat 30¢. The percentage is set by your plan, and the 30¢ is the same on every order.

For example, a $100 order costs 2.9% + 30¢, or $3.20, on the Basic plan, and 2.4% + 30¢, or $2.70, on Advanced. The flat 30¢ bites hardest on small orders: on a $10 sale it is 3% on its own, before the percentage is even added. Put your own average order value into the calculator to see the real per-sale cut.

Shopify Payments vs a Third-Party Gateway

Process payments through Shopify Payments and you pay only the card rate in the table above. Pick a third-party gateway instead, such as PayPal, Stripe or Authorize.net, and Shopify adds a surcharge on top of whatever that gateway already charges you. The surcharge is 2% on Basic, 1% on the Shopify plan and 0.6% on Advanced.

So a third-party gateway is paid twice: once by the gateway for processing the card, and once by Shopify for not using Shopify Payments. Switching to Shopify Payments removes the Shopify surcharge in full. Select a third-party gateway in the calculator, then switch to Shopify Payments, and the gap between the two totals is exactly what the surcharge is costing you.

What the 2% Third-Party Fee Costs at Your Monthly Revenue

The third-party surcharge is a percentage of everything you sell, so it grows with your revenue. On Basic at 2%, every $1,000 of monthly sales hands Shopify an extra $20 on top of the gateway fee, and $10,000 a month works out to an extra $200. On the Shopify plan the surcharge halves to 1%, and on Advanced it drops to 0.6%.

At higher volumes this is often the deciding factor between plans: the lower surcharge on a pricier plan can pay for the higher monthly subscription several times over. Model your real monthly sales in the calculator on each plan to see where the lines cross, subscription cost included.

Is My Fee Percentage Healthy?

As a rough guide, if your total fees come in under about 3% of monthly sales you are in good shape and keeping most of your revenue. Once fees climb past 5% of sales, it is worth a look: moving to Shopify Payments, or stepping up a plan for the lower rate and surcharge, usually brings the figure back down.
