Beverages is one of the widest categories on Shopify: coffee subscriptions and wine clubs, craft beer and kombucha, spirits, cold brew, tea, functional drinks, mixers and mocktails. What ties them together on the buying side is that most of what a beverage store sells is either a repeat buy (the morning coffee, the weekly kombucha, the club shipment) or an occasion buy (a wedding gift, a housewarming, a tasting night with friends). Very little of it is the impulse one-off that dominates apparel or beauty.

Two things shape how stores sell in this category. Alcohol brings hard constraints that other categories don't touch: age verification, state-by-state and country-level shipping restrictions, adult signature at delivery, and label compliance. And even outside alcohol, bottles are heavy and break, so shipping cost and packaging quality make a bigger dent in unit margin than most operators expect. The panels below show what those stores actually run.

Our take

Lead the storefront with the subscription, not the single order. For coffee, tea, kombucha and any category with a weekly or monthly repeat rhythm, subscribe-and-save should be the default product-page action, not a small link below "add to cart." The lifetime value of a subscriber tends to run several times a one-off buyer, and the customer expects the option from the first visit.

Build the variety pack, not the single SKU. Tasting flights, mixed cases, coffee samplers and mocktail multi-packs are how first-time buyers say yes without committing to a full bottle or a full bag of one origin. Set the multi-pack as a prominent homepage product, not a side option. It also softens the "what if I don't like it" objection that kills the first purchase.

Solve age gating, state routing and adult-signature shipping before you launch alcohol. These are the operational rails, not garnish. A single-state or single-country launch built cleanly beats a nationwide launch that ships to states you're not licensed in. Treat the compliance work as part of the store setup, not something to bolt on the day before you go live.

Price freight into the sticker, not next to it. Bottles are heavy and fragile, so shipping is a real number the customer is going to see. Either build shipping into the price and offer "free shipping over a threshold" as the visible frame, or show a live freight quote on the product page. Surprising the buyer with a serious shipping charge on a modest bottle at checkout is the fastest way to lose the order.

How this data works

Every figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts, read the theme and apps each one actually runs, and classify the store by product category and business model. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store download counts.

Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
