Jeans stores by the numbers

Apps per store
The average jeans store runs 5.8 apps.

Jeans are the hardest apparel item to sell online. A fit that runs half a size small, a rise that reads different on the model than on the shopper, or a wash that photographs bluer than it wears will each turn a sale into a return. The category also sits in the wardrobe as a staple, so a customer who finds a fit stays for years and reorders on autopilot. The stores that hold on to those customers spend their setup budget on the same three things: getting the size right the first time, showing the fabric the way a magazine would, and making the return quick enough that the shopper feels safe trying two sizes.

The panels below show the themes and apps those stores actually run, pulled from live storefront detection across our Shopify dataset rather than from surveys. Read them together. The theme layer sets the pace for product photography and filters, and the app stack does the heavier lifting on reviews, subscriptions, sizing help, and returns.

Our take

First, sizing is the whole shop. A jeans buyer wants a waist and inseam that fit and a rise that flatters, and none of that comes through in a stock photo. Every store that keeps customers builds around a size chart with real numbers, a fit finder or quiz, and comparison notes like "runs half a size small" or "fits closer than our straight fit." Cutting corners on sizing shows up in the return rate before the copy shows up in a search.

Second, show the fabric like it costs money. Denim reads dark, then light, then somewhere in between depending on wash and light. The stores winning at conversion post close-ups on the weave, notes on weight and stretch, model shots at more than one height, and clear language on rigid versus stretch. Fabric feel is unphotographable, and the stores that treat that as a problem to solve, not a limitation to accept, hold onto shoppers longer.

Third, the returns are the fitting room. A jeans shopper who cannot try two sizes at home will buy from someone who lets them. A clear return policy, a real one and not a legalese one, earns first orders. Free or discounted returns pay for themselves in the first repeat purchase, which in this category is usually a second color of a fit that already worked.

Fourth, reviews from other buyers close what the copy cannot. Fit runs true or it does not, and no product page argues that case as well as another shopper does. Photo reviews, height and size annotations, and a short "how it fits" prompt at review time are worth more here than most category-level marketing spend, because the next buyer reads them like a fitting-room mirror.

How this data works

Every figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts, read the theme and apps each one actually runs, and classify the store by product category and business model. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store download counts.

Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
