Tea stores by the numbers

Apps per store
The average tea store runs 5.8 apps.

A Shopify tea store sells a replenishment category where every element of the product (the leaves, the brewing instructions, the sourcing story) carries weight in the sale. Buyers in this vertical fall into two broad groups: ritual drinkers who want ceremony and provenance, and daily drinkers who want convenience and consistency. The same storefront usually has to serve both, which puts weight on how clearly the catalog separates ceremonial-grade from everyday blends, and how comfortable the brand is talking about origin without reading like a wine list.

The vertical has shifted hard toward matcha in the last few years. The dataset breakdown in the panels below shows matcha ahead of every other tea type by a wide margin, with green tea second and the classic black-tea segment distant third. That reshaping affects everything from product photography (bright jade-green powder, bamboo whisks, ceremonial bowls) to the accessory revenue line (whisks, sifters, tins) that healthy tea stores build alongside the leaf sales.

Our take

Lead with the ritual, even if the product is everyday. Tea shoppers are rarely just buying leaves; they are buying into a quiet moment, a wellness habit, or a cultural practice. Storefronts that photograph the brewing moment (steam, pour, bowl) in parallel to the pouch convert better than storefronts that only photograph the pouch. The same product sells differently depending on which story the page leads with.

Build subscriptions from day one. Tea is a classic replenishment category: a tin or pouch empties every three to eight weeks, and the shopper who liked the first order will reorder if the path is easy. A subscription option on the product page, with a visible discount tied to the subscribe tier, is one of the highest-leverage habits in this vertical. The stores that treat subscriptions as a growth lever rather than an afterthought outperform the ones that bolt them on later.

Make provenance easy to verify. Where the leaf is grown, when it was harvested, and who processed it are decision points for ritual-grade shoppers and marketing material for everyday ones. A dedicated origin block on the product page (region, altitude, picking season, cultivar for matcha) does both jobs at once. Vague "sourced from the finest estates" copy loses to a photo of the actual farm.

Treat accessory sales as a second revenue line. The matcha surge in particular pulled a whole accessory stack into tea stores: whisks (chasen), sifters, bowls, tins, infusers. For a shopper buying ceremonial matcha for the first time, the accessory bundle is often the second order and sometimes the first, since the leaf is useless without the gear. A storefront that cross-sells accessories at the matcha product page and in the cart captures a meaningful share of this revenue; one that treats accessories as a separate collection the shopper has to find on their own leaves money on the table.

How this data works

Every figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts, read the theme and apps each one actually runs, and classify the store by product category and business model. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store download counts.

Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
