Carthook is a Shopify app in the upsell and cross-sell category. The story its usage data tells is very specific: it has settled into the subscription-brand corner of Shopify, and it does not really live outside it. Nearly every store running Carthook also runs Recharge, and most of them layer in a full commerce marketing stack alongside. This is not a mainstream conversion tool. It is a specialist utility that answers one question: how do you sell more to a shopper the moment they buy?
The stores using Carthook carry heavier app stacks than most Shopify merchants, which is another way of saying these are operator-heavy brands with a lot of moving parts. Their catalogs are mid-sized rather than large. Their store-type mix leans subscription, multichannel, and wholesale. If you are running a subscription brand and looking to add an intelligent post-purchase upsell, Carthook is worth a serious look. If your store is a simple one-time-purchase merchandising storefront, this tool is over-specified for your problem.
Where it fits. Carthook is a post-purchase upsell layer for subscription-first Shopify brands. The near-universal Recharge pairing across its user base is the tell: this is where Recharge stores go for one-click upsell offers after the initial cart converts. It is not a general checkout enhancer, and it does not compete with mainstream upsell apps on that front.
The trade-off. You are adding another paid layer to an already-heavy stack, and Carthook's billing lives partly outside the Shopify App Store (an external plan tier), so the cost picture is not one glance. The freemium install is inviting, but the useful features sit behind the paid plan. Merchants who install expecting a broader conversion tool often find the product narrower than expected.
Ideal store. A Shopify store already on Recharge (or planning to move to it) that wants a purpose-built post-purchase offer flow. Bonus fit if your marketing runs through WhatsApp channels: an unusually large share of Carthook stores also lean on WhatsApp marketing tooling, which points to an audience concentration in that channel and, most likely, in India and Southeast Asia.
Before you commit. Ask what problem the upsell is meant to solve, then compare Carthook against Shopify's native post-purchase page extensions and the mainstream upsell apps like AfterSell or ReConvert. If you are not on subscriptions and not on WhatsApp, one of those may cover you with fewer moving parts. If you are on Recharge and want a dedicated companion product, Carthook is in the conversation.

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
