Software stores by the numbers

Apps per store
The average software store runs 5.8 apps.

Software stores on Shopify sell things a shopper downloads, redeems, or signs into: a desktop or mobile app, a license key, a plugin or asset pack, a game, a cloud subscription, or a membership that includes a paid download. The customer leaves with a serial number, a download link, or a login, not a parcel. That one difference reshapes almost everything about the shop: no shipping settings, no inventory, no restock delay, no returns window in the usual sense, and no reason to show a product photo at the top of a page the way an apparel store would. The buyer wants three things fast: proof the thing exists, proof it will work on their setup, and a receipt they can keep.

Repeat purchase in software looks nothing like repeat purchase in physical categories. A buyer who likes the tool rarely comes back for a different one; they come back for an upgrade, another seat, or a renewal. Software stores lean strongly on the subscription model, and the panels below show how pronounced that is. Pricing is the hardest page to write (plans, features, renewal cadence, pro-rated upgrades), and legal is the sharpest surprise (digital-goods VAT in the EU and UK charges the buyer's rate regardless of the seller's location; US sales tax rules on SaaS vary by state). Payment risk is also different: a license key or download is instant, which means fraud at the gate turns into a chargeback faster than it does on physical goods.

Our take

Lead with the subscription model, not with product grids. A software catalog shaped like a clothing shop (grid of thumbnails) misses what the buyer actually came for: a plan comparison and a receipt with a license. Build the home as a plan page, with product tiles as a secondary panel for pack sales and one-offs.

Treat the download page as the real checkout thank-you page. Most software fraud and support friction happens between "payment confirmed" and "I can use the thing", so the page that delivers the license, serial, or install link needs to be fast, re-visitable, and plain. A fancy branded download page is worse for the customer than a plain one that always loads.

Get the tax surface right before you ship. EU and UK rules charge VAT at the buyer's rate on digital goods regardless of the seller's location, and the rate changes every time a buyer crosses a border. Set tax zones early; a store that treats software as physical goods will refund every European sale once the first invoice complaint lands.

Design for a renewal, not a one-shot. A software buyer rarely becomes a repeat buyer by buying a different tool; they become one by upgrading, adding a seat, or renewing. The pages that pay rent in this vertical are the account page, the upgrade page, and the renewal reminder email, in that order.

How this data works

Every figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts, read the theme and apps each one actually runs, and classify the store by product category and business model. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store download counts.

Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
