How to Change the Language in Shopify (Admin, Storefront, and POS)

How do I change the language on my Shopify admin only, not the storefront?
Click your profile icon in the top-right of the Shopify admin, select Manage account, then under Account find the Language setting and click Change language. Pick your preferred language and save. This changes only your own view of the admin; your storefront, your staff members’ views, and your customers all stay on their own settings.

How do I add a second language to my Shopify store?
From the Shopify admin, go to Settings > Languages, click Add language, pick the language from the dropdown, and choose whether to publish it immediately or keep it unpublished while you translate. Once a second language is published, most Shopify themes automatically show a language switcher so shoppers can pick between them.

What is the difference between Shopify’s native translation and a translation app?
Shopify’s native translation (via the free Translate & Adapt app) covers product fields, collection pages, blog posts, and most theme strings. A dedicated translation app also handles text baked into images, content inside third-party apps, hreflang SEO tags, bulk AI translation, and features like glossaries and auto-translation of new content. Our picks for the current translation-app field are in our Shopify translation apps roundup.

Can I change the default language of my Shopify store without losing my existing translations?
Changing the default language rewrites the primary theme strings, and Shopify warns you that any manual translations you have already done to the current default may need to be redone. For a live store with existing content, we strongly recommend adding the new language as an additional published language rather than overwriting the default. If you must change the default, back up your translated content first and test on a draft theme.

How do I change the language on the Shopify POS app?
Open the Shopify POS app on your iPad or iPhone, tap the Menu icon in the top-left, then Settings, then Language. Pick the language you want and the app reloads in it. The POS language is a per-device setting, separate from both your admin and your storefront. If a language is not listed, check your device’s system language settings; POS pulls from the OS’s available languages.
-
Why is my Shopify language switcher not showing?
The language switcher only appears on the storefront once you have added a second published language in Settings > Languages. A language in draft status does not trigger the switcher. If your language is published but the switcher still is not visible, check that your theme supports a built-in switcher (most do), or install a translation app that ships one.

Does changing the Shopify store language and region affect SEO?
Done correctly, extra languages help SEO by letting you rank in multiple markets. The two things that decide which way it goes: each translated page gets its own URL (not a JavaScript overlay on the English URL), and hreflang tags correctly point every translated page to every other version of itself. Shopify Markets handles this automatically for region-based routing; a translation app handles it for language-based translations. The full setup is covered in our multilingual Shopify setup guide.
Which Language Change Did You Actually Need?
If you only wanted the admin to look different for you, that is done in two clicks under your profile menu. If you wanted the storefront’s default to change, that is Settings and should be approached carefully on a live store. If you wanted shoppers to be able to switch languages, that is Add Language plus a translation workflow.
For the storefront translation workflow itself, our picks are in the Shopify translation apps roundup, and the broader setup (URL structure, hreflang, switcher UX, Shopify Markets) lives in the multilingual Shopify setup guide.
