Afterpay is a buy-now-pay-later option that lets shoppers split a purchase into four interest-free installments. The store gets paid upfront and Afterpay carries the repayment risk. On Shopify it shows up as a checkout payment method and an on-product messaging widget rather than a typical app, which is why our detector picks it up as a storefront fingerprint across live stores.
In our data it sits mid-table among payment tools by store count, running on a couple of thousand live Shopify stores. Those merchants tend to carry larger catalogs and run more apps than the average store, which fits its core use: higher-consideration purchases where spreading the cost lifts conversion and order value. The figures below show where it ranks and the themes its stores run.
Why stores add it: BNPL takes the price shock out of checkout, which tends to lift completed orders and average order value on mid-to-higher ticket items. That lift is the whole reason to carry it.
Who it suits: the stores running it skew toward larger catalogs and a shopper base that values spreading payments. It matters less for very low-ticket or pure impulse buys, where the installments barely move the decision.
What it costs you: Afterpay is free to add, including the on-site messaging, with no monthly subscription. You pay only when a customer uses it: a per-sale fee of roughly 4% to 6% plus about $0.30, scaled to your volume and region, in return for being paid upfront while Afterpay carries the repayment risk.
How it goes on: it is added as a payment method and a product-page message, not a one-click app install, so setup runs through Afterpay's merchant onboarding and your Shopify payment settings.

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
