Shop Pay is Shopify's own accelerated checkout, not a third-party app. It lets returning shoppers pay in one tap using details they already saved on any Shopify store, so they skip retyping their email, address, and card. Because it is built into Shopify, any store on Shopify Payments can switch it on. The whole point is cutting checkout friction, which is where a lot of mobile sales slip away.
Once enabled, Shop Pay appears as a fast-checkout button on cart and product pages, and as an option at checkout. It stores customer information securely across stores, supports one-tap repeat purchases, and can offer installment payments where eligible. It also ties into the Shop app for order tracking and a carbon-offset shipping option. In our data, the stores where we detect Shop Pay tend to be larger and more established, with deeper catalogs, which fits shops that treat checkout speed as a way to lift conversion.
Why turn it on. The main win is speed. Returning customers check out in one tap, which lifts mobile conversion where long forms cause drop-off. For most stores already on Shopify Payments, switching it on is low effort.
The trade-off. You hand the checkout moment to Shopify's flow, with less control over its look and steps. Installment payments carry merchant fees, and a few shoppers may not recognize the Shop brand. It is not a fit if you need a fully custom checkout.
Who benefits most. Stores with repeat buyers and heavy mobile traffic gain the most, since saved details pay off on the second visit. A new store with little return traffic will see a smaller lift at first.
Before you rely on it. Confirm it is active in your payment settings and test the button on mobile. Do not assume it covers every payment case. Keep your other accepted methods clear at checkout, so shoppers who skip Shop Pay are not stuck.

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
