Frequently Bought Together, by Code Black Belt, is the Amazon-style product recommender for Shopify. It drops a "Frequently bought together" block on the product page, learns from the store's own order history, and suggests items that regularly sell together. Manual bundles, product-specific rules, and bundle discounts sit on top of the AI recommendations, so a merchant can override anything the algorithm surfaces.
It is one of the older names in Shopify's upsell and cross-sell category, and most stores use it for a single job: lifting average order value on the product page. Installation is theme-agnostic. The widget renders automatically once the app is authorized, with placement, styling, and translations configurable to match the storefront. A free tier covers small catalogs; paid plans layer in bundle pricing, analytics, and higher order volume.
Where it fits: Long-lived name in Shopify's cross-sell space. If a merchant has been running a store for a few years they've probably tried it, and the app's staying power in the category is its own signal.
The trade-off: Right tool for a specific job. It is a product-page cross-sell widget, not a full personalization engine. Stores weighing it against Rebuy or LimeSpot should treat FBT as the lighter, more focused option.
Ideal store: A catalog with enough related SKUs and an existing order history for the AI to learn from. Bundling makes natural sense in the vertical (apparel accessories, cosmetics kits, complementary hardware). A brand-new store will see generic recommendations for the first few weeks until the model has orders to train on.
Before you commit: The upside lives on the product page. Placement matters. A widget parked below the fold on mobile earns almost nothing, and merchants who want the AOV lift should test position before judging performance.

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
