Across 37 real Heritage stores, 72.4% pass Google’s Core Web Vitals (median LCP 1.7s). Filtered to stores running only a few apps, that rises to 81.8%, isolating the theme’s own speed from the apps merchants pile on.
Heritage is a free Shopify-built theme designed for brands that lead with a story. Long hero sections, editorial spacing, and slower visual pacing all suggest a shopper who is willing to scroll, read, and feel the brand before adding to cart. It fits craft, artisan, apparel, and small-batch product lines where the "why" is a bigger part of the sale than the "what."
The theme is one of Shopify's own, so the update cadence, admin polish, and Online Store 2.0 features track Shopify's roadmap directly. That is a real safety net for a solo founder or small team who does not want to depend on a third-party developer for security fixes or a next-year re-platform. It also means the feature set is deliberately narrower than most paid themes at the same visual fit.
Where it fits. Heritage suits founder-led brands whose product is bought through a story. Roasters, distillers, apparel labels, home-goods studios, and any single-line brand that wants an editorial feel. It also fits an existing brand with strong photography and a small SKU count that would look sparse on a grid-heavy theme.
The trade-off. Feature depth. Merchandising conveniences that paid themes bundle (dense megamenus, quick-add drawers, multi-attribute swatches, heavy filter systems) are lighter here or need an app. You get a clean, fast base and a very sharp editorial layout, and you build up from there with apps or code. Stores with hundreds of SKUs will feel that missing depth quickly.
Ideal store. A single-line or curated-line brand under a hundred SKUs, with photography strong enough to carry a full-width hero and enough written copy for an about section that actually gets read. Fashion, food and drink with a real story, home decor, artist merch, and premium accessories all match. Not a fit for a supplement stack, an electronics catalog, or any store where the shopper is comparison-shopping specs.
Before you commit. Preview the theme with your own images and your longest product description before installing. Heritage's editorial layout can look empty when it is asked to carry stock photography or thin copy. Plan the app stack too: reviews, subscriptions if relevant, and any advanced merchandising you will need. A free theme with a clean floor is a great start when you know what you will add; it is a rough one when you assume "free" means "everything included."

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the active theme each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
