Across 55 real Rise stores, 80.9% pass Google’s Core Web Vitals (median LCP 1.7s). Filtered to stores running only a few apps, that rises to 80%, isolating the theme’s own speed from the apps merchants pile on.
Rise is one of Shopify's free Horizon-collection themes, sitting alongside Vessel, Ritual and Studio in the group that ships with strict layout rules and a small handful of sections. Its Theme Store rating skews low, and the recurring complaint is the same across reviews: the template settings are locked down harder than long-time theme buyers are used to.
The tradeoff shows up in the field. The majority of live Rise stores pass Core Web Vitals in Chrome UX Report data, with tight median LCP and INP and no measurable layout shift. Isolating stores that keep their app stacks lean barely changes the picture, which points at the theme itself rather than merchant restraint doing the work.
Guardrails over customization. Merchants who want to hand-tune sections tend to bounce off Rise; merchants who want a fast starter without touching Liquid tend to keep it.
Field CWV is where it earns its keep. The pass rate on real Rise stores holds up in Chrome UX Report data, and median INP stays inside the "good" bucket on mobile. That is a strong signal for stores expecting phone-first traffic.
Adoption is early and thin. The tracked footprint is small, so category-level cuts (verticals, business models, app-stack sizes) will not carry the sample size heavier free themes do.
Free and Shopify-built. No license cost and no third-party developer to route support through; every update ships with the platform.

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the active theme each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
