Tolstoy adds interactive, shoppable video to a Shopify store. Merchants upload or import a video once, tag products inside it, and then place that video anywhere on the storefront (product pages, homepage banners, story-style carousels, quiz-shaped widgets) with the "add to cart" action happening from inside the player itself. UGC pulled from social feeds, creator content, and unboxing clips all sit in the same library.
The pitch is fewer clicks between "curious viewer" and "cart added": a shopper who taps a product tag inside a video moves through checkout without leaving the video surface. Since Vimeo's 2023 acquisition, Tolstoy's video hosting and ad-friendly export sit on the same infrastructure as Vimeo's business plans, which is why some stores also use the same clips for paid ads and email embeds without re-cutting the file.
Where it fits. Stores selling categories that benefit from motion, like apparel being worn, cookware in use, tools demonstrated, or cosmetics applied, are where shoppable video pays for itself. Categories where the still image already sells the product (books, print-on-demand tees, dropshipping commodities) get less lift.
What's actually in the box. The free plan is enough to run a homepage carousel and a couple of product-page videos, which is where most stores start. Paid tiers open up quiz-style widgets, more monthly video views, UGC import from TikTok and Instagram, and shoppable stories across multiple templates. Analytics are per-video, per-widget, and per-product, so you can see which clip drove which SKU rather than a single aggregate "video engagement" number.
Trade-off with theme performance. Any video widget on a product page is a network fetch and a rendering cost. Tolstoy loads its player lazily, and the hit to Core Web Vitals is smaller than an autoplay MP4 sitting in the theme, but it isn't zero. A store already struggling with LCP or INP on mobile should test the difference on the pages that would actually carry the widget rather than averaging it across the store.
Before you install. Two things worth checking on your own site first. First, whether your product images are already doing the conversion work: open Shopify Analytics, look at product-page conversion, and if it's already strong there is less room to gain by adding video. Second, whether you have footage to feed the tool. Shoppable video widgets look sparse when only two clips are in rotation, so plan the first month's content library before turning it on rather than after.

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
