Which Shopify themes do stores actually run in 2026? Not the ones with the loudest marketing, but the ones real merchants install and keep. We answer that from live data: our detector reads the theme on millions of Shopify storefronts and refreshes the counts every day, so this ranking reflects what is live right now, not a one-time guess.

The short version: one free theme still sits far ahead of everything else, a brand-new free theme is climbing faster than anything we have tracked in years, and several paid themes that led the pack a few seasons ago are quietly sliding. Below is the full picture, with the numbers pulled straight from our database as you read this.

Key Takeaways
1
Dawn, Shopify’s free default theme, is still the most-used theme by a wide margin.
2
Horizon, a free theme Shopify released in 2025, is the fastest-rising theme on the platform.
3
Shopify’s new free Horizon family (Savor, Tinker, Atelier, Ride and more) is picking up installs across niche stores.
4
Several paid themes that ranked near the top a few years ago are now flat or losing share.
5
Free themes fill most of the top of the list, while premium themes still lead among larger, established brands.

The most-used Shopify themes right now

The table below ranks themes by how often they appear across the Shopify stores we scan each month. It updates on its own as fresh scans come in, so the order can shift from week to week.

A quick word on what this measures. A store can run any theme it likes, but only a handful show up again and again across the whole platform. To rank here, a theme has to be genuinely widespread, not just popular inside one niche.

Dawn leads, but Horizon is closing the gap

Dawn holds the top spot for a simple reason: it is the free theme every new Shopify store starts on. Millions of merchants launch on Dawn and never switch, so its lead is built on the sheer number of stores that open each year.

The real movement is behind it. Horizon, another free Shopify theme, has climbed the ranking at a pace we rarely see from a theme this new.

What makes that unusual is Horizon’s age. It reached this position through merchants actively switching to it, not through years of stores piling up, which is the opposite of how Dawn got to number one.

  • #2 theme in our dataset. Horizon is the #2 most-used theme in our dataset.
  • 1.6x more used than Prestige. Stores in our dataset use Horizon 1.6 times more than Prestige, the next theme in the ranking.
  • #2 theme for Subscription stores. Horizon is the #2 theme among Subscription stores in our dataset.

Shopify’s new free themes are gaining ground

Horizon did not arrive alone. In May 2025 Shopify released a family of ten free themes built on its newest editor, and they are starting to show up in our scans. Each one targets a different kind of store:

  • Savor suits food, drink and lifestyle brands with bold, edge-to-edge product images.
  • Tinker leans creative, with clean layouts and bento-style collection cards.
  • Atelier fits makers and design-led shops.
  • Ride goes sporty, with dark backgrounds and bright accents.
  • Origin and the rest round out the set for everything from artisanal to minimal stores.

Most of these are still small, but a few are growing steadily. Tinker has been the quickest riser of the group.

The themes losing momentum

Not every theme is on the way up. Several premium themes that ranked near the top a few years ago have gone flat or slipped as free themes caught up on speed and features. Prestige and Impact are the clearest examples: still strong, still widely used, but no longer gaining ground.

  • Faster than 89% of themes. Prestige beats 89% of the themes we track on the share of its real stores passing Core Web Vitals (77.8%).
  • #3 theme in our dataset. Prestige is the #3 most-used theme in our dataset.
  • #3 theme for Subscription stores. Prestige is the #3 theme among Subscription stores in our dataset.

This is the trend to watch in 2026. As Shopify keeps improving its free themes, the gap that once justified a paid theme for a typical store keeps narrowing. Premium themes still hold their place, but mostly among larger brands that need the extra layout options.

Free vs paid: which should you choose?

The ranking makes the trade-off clear. Free themes now cover most of what a growing store needs, and they load fast because Shopify builds them around its own performance standards. Paid themes earn their price when you have a big catalog or want features a free theme leaves out.

  • Pick a free theme (Dawn, Horizon, or one of the new family) if you are starting out, want fast load times, and sell a focused range of products.
  • Consider a premium theme (Impulse, Prestige) if you run a large catalog, need advanced filtering, or want a distinct look out of the box.

How we measure theme popularity

These numbers come from our own detection data, not a survey or a single sample. We track more than 3.5 million Shopify stores and refresh the theme on each one on a rolling basis, so the ranking reflects live installs rather than a fixed snapshot.

That matters because a small, one-time sample can throw up odd results, including crowning a niche premium theme as the most-used on the platform. When you measure continuously across millions of stores, a theme has to be truly common to rise, and the picture stays stable instead of jumping around with each new pull.

You can check any store yourself with our free Shopify theme detector, and browse the underlying data on our Shopify theme statistics page. For the full breakdown across themes, apps, and speed, see our Shopify Statistics report.

The bottom line

Dawn still rules the platform, but 2026 belongs to the free themes chasing it. Horizon is the standout, its new siblings are finding their footing, and the premium themes that once led are holding rather than growing.
