Crisp is a customer-messaging platform built by Crisp IM SAS, a French SaaS company. It is not a Shopify-specific tool. Crisp runs across websites, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and email, with Shopify as one of many integration points. The core product is an omnichannel inbox. Every conversation a customer starts, in any channel, lands in the same shared workspace where the team can respond, tag, assign, and route messages.

In our dataset, Crisp shows up on a meaningful slice of Shopify stores and correlates with a specific merchant profile. Stores running Crisp carry higher-than-average app stacks and moderately deep catalogs. That combination reads as an established multi-channel operator. A team already juggling several tools for marketing, checkout and post-purchase adds Crisp because customer messages are arriving across too many surfaces to track individually. Crisp does not currently appear as an active listing on the Shopify App Store, so most stores install it via crisp.chat rather than through the app-store discovery flow.

Our take

Match Crisp to your message volume, not to a competitor list. Crisp's economics get better with volume; its per-inbox pricing punishes small teams handling a handful of tickets a week. A store fielding fewer than a couple of dozen chats a day usually gets more mileage from a native tool like Shopify Inbox or a lighter competitor. A store fielding continuous chat across web, Instagram and WhatsApp is where Crisp's shared inbox actually earns its subscription.

The AI agent is the pitch. Test the fallback. Crisp's headline feature is its AI agent that answers based on your knowledge base. That works well for FAQ-style questions ("where is my order", "what is your return policy") and poorly for anything a shopper phrases like a human. Before rolling it out to real customers, run through a batch of realistic questions pulled from your own support inbox. Count how many the AI answers correctly, how many it escalates cleanly, and how many it hallucinates. If the last count is anything above zero, do not turn the AI on for shoppers still deciding whether to buy.

Watch the storefront weight. Chat widgets are heavy scripts, and Crisp is not the lightest. On a mobile-first store, the widget can add half a second to first paint if it loads on the initial page. Load it lazily (after the first paint or on scroll) and turn off any extras (screensharing, video, cobrowse) you do not actually use. A slow storefront costs more revenue than a slightly clunkier chat placement.

Crisp is a stack decision, not a purchase. Crisp only pays back if the store commits to it as the single messaging inbox. Half-adopting it (Crisp on the web widget, Shopify Inbox on mobile, Instagram DMs handled separately) recreates the fragmentation the app is meant to solve. Decide the boundary before you commit. Either Crisp becomes the front door for every customer conversation, or a lighter, cheaper tool matches your actual workflow better.

How this data works

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.

Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
