Klaviyo is the most-installed app in our dataset, found on more than one in three Shopify stores we scan. Its nearest email competitor is installed on one-sixth as many stores. That gap comes from a specific architectural decision: Klaviyo treats Shopify as a live data feed rather than a contact importer. Purchase events, cart additions, browsing behavior, and product-level interest all flow directly into its segmentation engine without any manual wiring beyond the initial connection. The result is an email and SMS platform where audience-building happens automatically, off real customer signals rather than form fills.
That depth is also why Klaviyo stores look different from the average Shopify store in our dataset. They run heavier app stacks, with review platforms, customer support tools, analytics, and subscription infrastructure sitting alongside Klaviyo as standard. These are not stores testing an idea. They are stores running a retention operation.
Monthly detection has moved from 41.15% in February to 38.64% in June, a meaningful dip for an app at this scale. Klaviyo is still dominant, but the direction is worth watching.
What stands out in the category data is how concentrated the user base is. Apparel and Accessories alone accounts for half the Klaviyo stores we classify. This is not an app spread evenly across Shopify. It is the default infrastructure for a specific type of merchant: high-repeat, DTC, email-dependent.
Best for: Apparel, Health and Beauty, and subscription-based stores based on our current data. Any store with repeat purchasers and a real email list will see the returns.
Watch out for: Under-configured accounts are common. Merchants who install Klaviyo without building flows are paying for infrastructure they are not using. If you are pre-launch or still under a few hundred subscribers, install it early and grow into it, but plan the flows before you pay for the list.
