Proof is a social-proof widget for Shopify: it displays live activity on the storefront (recent purchases, add-to-cart events, sign-ups, view counts) as small pop-ups or on-page banners, so a shopper landing cold sees signals that other real people are already buying. The reason a store adds one is conversion: a first-time visitor with no reference points buys more readily when the page shows that stock is moving and other shoppers are active, and Proof is one of the widgets that surfaces that activity on a Shopify theme.

The panels below show its dataset share and rank, the store types and themes it runs on, and the apps most commonly installed alongside it, a useful check on whether the volume it needs to feel active is a fit for your storefront.

Our take

Strengths. Proof pulls real activity from the store (orders, add-to-carts, sign-ups) and surfaces it as small notification popups or on-page counters, so the social-proof signal is grounded in what is actually happening rather than fabricated. On a store with real inbound traffic and a steady order rate, that stream of small notifications lifts conversion in the same way a busy shop lifts foot traffic. It sits in the theme cleanly (bottom-corner pop-ups, product-page counters) and does not need a designer to reskin the widget for a passable first launch.

Who it's for. A Shopify store with enough live traffic and order volume that the notification stream feels natural rather than sparse. Dropship-style catalogs with steady daily orders, DTC brands running paid traffic and getting real add-to-cart events, and volume categories (fashion, cosmetics, supplements, gadgets) where multiple shoppers are on the store at once. Also a fit for stores late in a growth phase where the difference between "empty" and "busy" is the last conversion nudge before a purchase.

Watchouts. On a low-traffic store the notification stream looks empty or repeats the same order all day, which reads worse than no widget at all: turn it on only when you have real signals to display. Over-firing is the second failure mode: three popups a minute becomes noise and shoppers dismiss them; tune frequency down to a rate that feels alive rather than pushy. Never turn on synthetic or fake activity: FTC endorsement rules treat fabricated purchase notifications the same as fabricated reviews, and a store caught doing it loses trust twice over. On premium and luxury categories the widget can read desperate, so consider a subtler variant (silent view-count on product pages rather than corner popups) or skip it entirely.

How this data works

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.

Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
