A WhatsApp button is a floating chat widget on a Shopify store that opens a WhatsApp conversation with the merchant when a shopper taps it. It is popular in markets where WhatsApp is already the default inbox, including India, Brazil, Spain, and much of the Middle East and South-East Asia, because it skips the friction of email forms and lets a shopper message a human (or a bot) from the device they already have open. On Shopify, the widget is almost never built into the theme itself; it comes from a dedicated app, so detecting it on a store tells you something about the store’s region and support model more than about its theme.
This stats page tracks aggregate presence of a WhatsApp chat button across the Shopify stores in our dataset, regardless of which app places it. The underlying fingerprint matches the click-to-WhatsApp pattern (the wa.me or api.whatsapp.com URL opened by the widget), so a store counts whether the button comes from SuperLemon, Pushdaddy, Dondy, Marketplus, a theme snippet, or a bespoke install. Because the detection is feature-level, there is no single vendor, review score, or pricing attached, and the panels below describe the behaviour of the stores that run some form of it.
Treat it as a regional signal, not a universal upgrade. Most stores adding a WhatsApp button are selling into regions where WhatsApp is the primary messaging channel. For a US or UK-first catalogue, a WhatsApp button is often less useful than live chat, SMS, or email flows, because the shopper you want to reach does not have WhatsApp open. Look at where your orders actually come from before fitting one.
The specific app matters less than you would guess. The user-facing widget is close to a commodity (a floating button, a conversation opener), so the differentiators sit in the admin: multiple-agent routing, auto-replies, click tracking, cart-recovery messaging, and whether that recovery is allowed under Meta’s current rules. Judge by those, not by the colour of the button.
Abandoned-cart recovery is where it earns its spend. A plain button is a free upgrade to any store already fielding WhatsApp enquiries, but the paid tiers of these apps usually earn their keep on recovery flows: a template message to a shopper who checked out and then paused, sent through a Meta-approved WhatsApp Business API. That mechanic is where the measurable lift sits, and it is where the compliance work also sits (opt-in, template approval, 24-hour window rules).
Watch for layout and speed cost. A floating button is a fixed-position element that renders on every page, and some apps also inject a widget bubble, a prompt tooltip, and a Facebook Pixel event listener. On a theme already running a chat app, a sticky cart, and a cookie banner, the WhatsApp button is often the one that pushes the mobile layout past comfortable. Install it, then test the product and checkout pages on a mid-range Android before you call the setup done.

This figure comes from live detection: we scan Shopify storefronts and read the apps each one runs, then express it as a share of the 3,500,000+ stores in our dataset. It is a share of every store in our dataset, not just recently scanned stores, so it moves more slowly than the month-over-month figures on our trends page. We report what is currently detected, not historical installs or Theme Store / App Store counts.
Independent by design: rankings are determined solely by live detection data. Affiliate relationships never affect what ranks or how stores are counted. Read the full methodology →
